Riding an all-terrain vehicle safely means complying with safety rules. Here are some of the basics:

  • Don’t EVER ride an ATV while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or if you are fatigued.
  • Wear protective gear: a snug-fitting helmet that meets your state’s safety standards; warm protective gloves; over-the-ankle boots with low heels; long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.
  • Protect your eyes with a face shield or goggles – not just regular sunglasses.
  • Stick with off-road use. Do not drive on public roads, where other vehicles could hit you, or on paved surfaces that will affect your handling and control.
  • Know your terrain, and maintain a speed that is safe for that terrain, the weather, your experience, and any other conditions that may affect control of your vehicle.
  • Understand the differences between your ATV and an automobile. Before you head out, learn how your transmission, brakes, throttles and other controls work.
  • Check the mechanical condition of your ATV before each ride, and make sure that it is maintained regularly.
  • If you have an ATV for a single rider only, don’t be tempted to carry a passenger.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s minimum age recommendation, which is contained on a warning label on the ATV.
  • Regardless of the minimum age recommended, educate and supervise riders under the age of 16.
  • Know the laws and regulations that govern ATV riding in your state, including whether or not you have to register your vehicle.
